Activist Collective Asserts to Have Scraped Countless of Music Files from Spotify

A digital rights group has stated to have harvested millions of tracks from the popular streaming service and is getting ready to publish them online.

Potential Boost for Artificial Intelligence Training

Industry experts said the seeming leak could aid AI companies searching for material to develop their technology.

An entity known as Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million music files from the platform and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and album names. The company, which carries more than 100 million songs, stated that the leak did not represent its entire catalog.

“We have identified and disabled the malicious user accounts that engaged in illegal scraping,” said a Spotify representative.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, further explained that an investigation into unauthorised access found a external actor collected public metadata and employed illicit tactics to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Mission and Concerns

The streaming service does not think the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a method of sharing large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and heritage”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Debate

A composer and campaigner for protecting artists’ copyright, remarked the breached music would likely be utilized for developing AI models.

“Training on illegally sourced data is sadly widespread in the AI industry, so this accessed music is almost certain to end up instructing AI models,” he said.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to a large online archive, a vast online archive of copyrighted books that has allegedly been used by the parent company of Facebook to train its systems.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on LinkedIn that individuals of the public could in theory “create their own private free version of the service”. The executive said it could also allow technology firms to “train on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has become a key issue between artists, writers and content creators on one side and AI companies on the other.

Government Proposals and Reactions

In the UK, creative professionals have protested against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies utilize protected work without permission unless the owner opts out. Almost every participant to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ concerns.

A government minister for science, innovation and development told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this right”. The government has committed to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by March 2025.
