Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
