Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
